Acrylic is a fairly new material for making aquariums, compared to glass. It is lightweight (weighs 50% less) and is more impact-resistant. Acrylic aquariums are 17x stronger, softer, and more flexible than glass. This allows forming tanks into almost any shape. Although it is easier to scratch, there not prone to chip or crack.

Acrylic aquariums offer better insulation than glass aquariums, reducing temperature flux and improving the quality of life for your fish.

Acrylic also has less of a tendency to distort things that are behind a curve. Acrylic fish tanks are as clear as glass (at 93% transparency) and don't add a green tint, because of this, the only distortion you are likely to see is that the fish is slightly misplaced, but the size and color are true.
